Virginia safety inspection vs. emissions test: what Lorton drivers need and when

The front door of John's Auto Care at 8401 Terminal Rd in Lorton

If you live in Lorton, your car answers to two separate checks: the Virginia safety inspection and the Northern Virginia emissions test. They look at different things, run on different schedules and are tracked in different places, which is why people get caught out by one while the other is up to date.

The safety inspection: every year

Virginia requires a safety inspection every 12 months. The sticker on your windshield shows the month it runs out. The inspection covers the parts that keep you and everyone around you safe: brakes, lights and signals, steering and suspension, tires and wheels, the horn, wipers, mirrors, glass and the exhaust system. The Virginia State Police set the standards.

The emissions test: every two years in Fairfax County

Lorton is in Fairfax County, one of the Northern Virginia localities where most gas cars and light trucks need an emissions test every two years. Brand new cars are exempt for their first few years. Your DMV registration renewal notice tells you when the test is due, so check it before you renew.

On most cars built since 1996, the test reads the car's onboard computer. If the check engine light is on, the car will not pass. That is the most common reason we see people fail.

If your car fails

  • Ask exactly which item failed and why. You should get a clear answer.
  • Get the repair priced before any work starts.
  • For a check engine light, have the cause tested, not just the code read. Clearing the code without fixing the cause usually means it comes back before the retest.
  • Bring it back for the re-check once the repair is done.
